Nugget Challenges and Case Studies

In this section of the web we present you with practice projects.  Each challenge will have a stated objective, suggested components to work with, and a posted answer.  Work through all the challenges to reinforce the concepts for each respective video series.  Have fun.

Nugget Challenge #1: Modifying a Presentation

Overview:
The point of this challenge is to get you familiar with how to use several of the tools and features that are commonly used when modifying a presentation. The features covered in this exercise include: Working with Headers and Footers, Modifying the Slide Master and Modifying the Slide Layouts. This exercise is in the same format as the MOUS PowerPoint 2000 certification exams.

The Challenge:
  1. Insert a footer with the following specifications on every slide in the following presentation except the title slides: The footer must contain a date in any format and update automatically. The footer must also contain a slide number and a footer text of “Copyright Micro-Widget, Inc.”
  2. Reposition the slide footer on every slide in the following presentation except the title slides according to the following specifications. The footer should be positioned 7.84” from the Top Left Corner Horizontally and 4.17” from the Top Left Corner Vertically and be rotated 270 degrees from its original position.
  3. In the following presentation, change the slide layouts on slides 4-9 and 11-16 from their existing layout to a two-column text layout without visiting every slide.
  4. In the following presentation, modify the slide color scheme on every slide within the presentation so that the title text of each slide appears in a red color and add this new scheme as a standard scheme.

Nugget Challenge #2: Customizing a Presentation

Overview:
The point of this challenge is to get you familiar with how to add, modify and customize graphical objects and slides within a presentation. The features covered in this exercise include: Adding Graphical Bullets, Adding Slide Transitions and Animating Text and Objects. This exercise is in the same format as the MOUS PowerPoint 2000 certification exams.

The Challenge:
  1. Apply bullets to all of the text in the body of the slide titled “The Team” according to the following guidelines:
    • The bullets should be a ‘club’ character chosen from the SYMBOL font/typeset;
    • The bullets should be the same color as the title of the slide, which follows the color scheme of the slide (dark purple);
    • The bullets should be 130% relative to the size of the text
  2. Apply a slide transition to slides 1,3,4 and 5 that uses a ‘cover left’ transition at a medium speed and also executes either on a mouse click or automatically after ten seconds. Make these changes all at once in the slide sorter view without having to visit each of these slides individually.
  3. Apply animation to the title in slide 3 so that it ‘crawls’ from the left side of the screen and the text is appears once letter at a time, then the entire title disappears after a mouse click.
  4. Apply animation to the graph in slide 3 so that the each data series is ‘wiped’ from the right. Also have a ‘whoosh’ sound playing during the chart animation. Do not animate the grid and legend.

Nugget Challenge #3: Managing Files

Overview:
The point of this challenge is to familiarize you with the tools and features that are commonly used with presentations saved as a web page. The features covered in this exercise include: Inserting Hyperlinks and Saving a Presentation as a Web Page. This exercise is in the same format as the MOUS PowerPoint 2000 certification exams.

The Challenge:

1) Assign a hyperlink on slide 2 to the graphical object with the number ‘5’ on it so that when you click on it, it will launch the website: http://www.cbtnuggets.com. Also include a screen tip that says “Click Here to Access Website” with this hyperlink.

2) On slide 7, select the text “Compose E-mail” from the last bullet and assign it a hyperlink that will create a new E-mail message to troy@cbtnuggets.com with a subject line of “Action Items.” Also modify the screen tip to say “New Mail Message.”

3) Save this presentation as a web page with the filename “Files” in the default directory. This web page should include only slides 1-7, has the text “My Files Presentation” in the title bar and displays the speaker notes on each slide. Use the functionality of PowerPoint to view this web page in your browser once its been created.

**NOTES FOR REVIEWING THE ANSWER:
Copy the Files.zip file to your computer and unzip it to the desired location. Then click on the Files.htm file from your windows explorer screen to view the presentation as a web page.
